We were eating Kozakattais.
Few of them were not cooked completely.
Hari had three in his plate. And one of it was already underway his belly.
I removed the other two, and replaced it with the cooked Kozakattais. Don’t know what he thought of why we were doing that, he exclaimed “aiyooo, first lendu chaapada thodanganama??!!??!!”

And Eashwar needs always a strong push.
He and I were having a tough time with each other getting through the motions, with him escaping and I chasing and chiding.
While giving him a bath, I wanted to reset the tone and I said.
” VA da edhavdhu paatu padalaam. “
Eashwar: Ok
Me: Enna padalaam.
Eashwar (singing): Ahankaaram kudindu varannu” …

During night, while trying to put him to sleep

Me: (eager to bring a close so that we go to sleep-mode). Avar ippo kadai moodi, aathuku poitu, chaptu, thoongirpar.

Ayyapan: Ava jabika maata illiya…adhunaale (we had been chanting Sahasranamam daily, that day we had chanted after dinner)

Eashwar: Ok Appa, Inime phone vanda, apdiye amma te koduthuduven..

Karunya (our neighbour girl birthday party)
Kids went to attend a birthday party of our neighbour Karunya.
The boys had got mickey mouse pencil box as return gifts. Eashwar said ” அம்மா, நாளைக்கு காலம்பற திரும்பியும் Karunya ஆத்துக்கு போகலாம்.” I thought he has the cake in mind when he said that. On asking why he wanted to, he said ” Hari odu rubber காணலை; அவனோட box leஇருந்துது. அது எடுக்க தான்”

Eashwar woke up from his nap, and says “amma, what gift can we Karunya?” I said we just gave her one yesterday for her birthday. Eashwar again “இல்லை, இன்னும் ஒரு gift”. I asked quizzically why: ” ஆமாம் , star birthday ku” 😀 😀

Amma had explained the meaning of manikandan as “கழுத்துல மணி கட்டிண்டு இருந்ததனால் அவர் பெயர் மணிகண்டன்”
Hari responded that “நான் கழுத்துல மணி காட்டினா நானும் மணிகண்டன்”
and continued that ” காருண்யா கட்டிண்டா , அவள் மணிகண்டீ”
And that was not the end he said Sunaina மணி கட்டிக்க வேண்டா , அவள் ஏற்கனவே மணி கட்டிண்டு இருக்கா”…I was confused and i was later clarified that his friends name is “Sunaina Manikandan” 🙂

Vishnu was preparing for his Independence day speech for the next day. Inspired by his Anna, Hari wanted to follow his footsteps, and drew flags and showed everyone. Vishnu write a speech and read it aloud to us. Seeing this Hari too was writing some random stuff in his notebook. Once Vishnu finished, Hari stood up and without any hesitation, he confidently spoke aloud ” Dear friends,.. F J D R R K F J M N O P S D T K L” … Well thats the random jottings he managed in his notebook and sincerely delivered.
——————————————————————————–The masonry work is going on in our house in full swing, with Eashwar and Hari supervising everything with dance and chat. One of the workers was carrying a heavy load of cement to the balcony, and Eashwars bursts with what would otherwise have been a Hari-repartee ” யாரு இது, யாரு இது, கல்லை தூக்கி போறானே”.

Hari was wearing a gold chain. He attempted his english skills and shouted excitingly “Sriram mama, I will get gold chain”.
I corrected. “Wow, `I got gold chain’. சொல்லு ..’got’ is past tense”
Since he wouldnt know the meaning of past tense, i continued ” Past tense na பழைய சம்பவம். அதான் ‘got’ சொல்லணும்”
He innocently replied ” இல்லை இந்த செயின் புதுசு மாமா, பழசு இல்லை”

I was teaching some bhjan on “rama namam” to kids. Eashwar asked me why do we call “Jai Shri ram”.
I explained that “Jai” means victory and since Rama conquered Ravana, we call him Jai shri ram.
Hari heard the word “ஜெயிச்சார்” about Ramar. And reponded
“அப்போ ராமர் `IPL’ ம் ஜெயிச்சிடுவார்”

Later, Eashwar who was convinced told Hari “டேய் காக்காக்கு வயசானா , அதான் கொக்கு . காக்காவோட சிறகெல்லாம் வெள்ளையாயிடும் இல்லையா”
Hari’s response “அப்போ கொக்குக்கு`கழுத்து எப்படி பெருசு ஆச்சு?

Eashwar was watching a cartoon channel. Suddenly he looked at as and asked “Today unicorn birthday… Shall we bake cake?”

Hari was being taught numbers till 20. Mam taught him “after” and “before”, So , i started questioning with simple numbers.

Hari: 4
And we came down till 1. Then when i asked “Before 1”, Hari shouted “Lets goooo !!” and ran
“3 .. 2. 1.. Lets go” is apparently some comic hero’s dialogue.

At home we had told kids not to name “பாம்பு” during night. Instead they should refer as ” நாகராஜா”.. So the rule is “நாகராஜா” at night and “பாம்பு” during day.
Eashwar was attending online class and one of his classmates name is “Nagaraja”.
Eashwar asked “அம்மா அவா ஏன் காலம்பற நாகராஜா னு கூப்பிடறா??”

One day we asked eashwar
“Eashwar, உனக்கு யார ரொம்ப பிடிக்கும் ?”
to which he replied “Ayyappan”. We were glad that he is affectionate yo his 8 month old younger brother. Then when asked why, he replied
“அவன் soft ஆ இருக்கான்”

Eashwar was prepared for a telephone interview for his school admission. But he didnt need one. When we told him that he got admitted in school, he went and asked Hari
“ஆனா phone le யாரும் என் கிட்டே பேசலையே”.
So, we tried a fake interview by calling him in phone. He was very sincere in the interview. When asked
“அப்பா office எங்க இருக்கு?”
” தாத்தா room லே”- Ofcourse thats the workspace during lockdown.
Again when asked ” நீ எப்போ school க்கு வருவை”
” நான் பெரிசானப்புறம் தான்”
After the interview we asked him the details. He faithfully repeated all the questions and answers and then told
“கடைசில shake-hand மாதிரி சொன்னா.”…
We were confused what it could be. It was not a video call, so it could not be some shanke-hand sign. After lot of possibilities we asked “Is it Congratulations ?” and Eashwar explained “ஆ! ஆமாம்…”

One day Vishnu was asking “What does apple have, Vitamin C or D? “
Overhearing this, Hari whispered “அம்மா, Apple வந்து “A” தானே “

Amma was teaching numbers to Hari. He is to identify the number “before” and “after” a numeral. Of course, he makes random guesses and so many mistakes.
Once when asked “What’s before 8?”
He confidently replied “1”. We brushed it off as his random guesses and prodded him again and again.
He stuck to his answer “Before 8, 1 … அங்க பாரு” and showed the calendar .. a column of dates 1,8, 15…

In continuation with the math exercise, and to make the learning funnier, i asked Hari
“Before 5, its 4, but what’s before புலி? ” and he giggled when i said “புலி குட்டி”. Similarly, before பசு we established கன்னுக்குட்டி.
Then i asked him whats “Before Sriram mama?”
He understood from the above discussion that before adult, its a child. So he replied “Before Sriram மாமா , நான் தான்…”

One day when Hari woke up, he saw the maid emerging beneath the cot after mopping.
Hari said aloud “ஓ! நீ கட்டிலுக்கு அடில தூங்கிண்டு இருந்தியா”

One day, Eashwar was angry and threw things at amma. Amma was hurt. We scolded eashwar and when Hari passed, we asked him

” என்ன சொன்னை ?”
“Ammamma ஓடு ஓடு !! சொன்னேன்”

Vishnu is a big time cricket fan and the display pictures in all the phones he could lay hands on will be changed to cricket icons like Dhoni, Kohli etc.
One day he wrote a small tamil poem. Everyone appreciated. Next day he thought he could write one more poem.
When i took ammas phone the display picture was already changed to ‘Thirualluvar’ 🙂

Eashwar lifted a big box of detergent powder by himself, with some difficulty. He was proud and called me to display his prowess.
He showed it to me with a difficult expression “அப்பா அப்பா இங்க பாரு..”.
Looking at his expression, i thought that he is trying to express the difficulty and hence exclaimed “ரொம்ப கஷ்டமா இருக்கு இல்லையா..”
It wasnt the response he expected. He wanted to tell he could lift. But at the same time, he didnt want to disappoint my train of thought as well. So, within a second he retored.
“அமாம் பெரிவாளுக்கு கஷ்டமா இருக்கும்” !!

I looked at it, “இல்லையே, நன்னா தானே ஓடிண்டு இருக்கு”
Eashwar “அந்த ஒல்லி முள்ளு மட்டும் தான் fast ஆ ஓடறது. குண்டு முள்ளு போகவே மாட்டேங்கறது….” %$#

Eashwar was wearing his knicker frontside back and his pockets were in the back. I pointed out to him
“Eashwar, Knicker மாத்தி போட்டிண்டிருக்கே டா”
” இல்லை, correct ஆ தான் போட்டிண்டிருக்கேன்.”
“பாரு டா pocket எல்லாம் பின்னாடி தான் இருக்கு”
And he replied with full conviction “ஆமாம் இந்த knicker ல பின்னாடி தான் pocket”.

As we cringed over such a disgusting statement, he continued

last week our relative Baskar anna called amma and she was talking to him. Hari went running shouting “அம்மா , அம்மம்மா பாஸ்கர் கிட்ட பேசிண்டு இருக்கா !!”
When asked “எந்த பாஸ்கர் ?”
“ஆகாஷோடு அப்பா” said Hari.
We might wonder who this Aakaash is? Aakash refers to a character in movie “Baskar oru Rascal”.

It took us some time.. Till then Eashwar used to pronounce “Full” as “Sull”. So , his excitement was his pronunciation of ‘f’ in Full. ——————————-

After flag hoisting in the apartments, they distributed much chocolate to all. Hari looked at the chocolate and said that its a chocolate from Bangladesh. We were surprised. Somewhere in 2014, I went for snorkelling in Korea. Vishnu was in school. He told his friends “டேய் எங்க மாமா கடலுக்கு அடியில் நீந்தினார் தெரியுமா . fish எல்லாம் பார்த்தார். ஆனா, fish இருக்கறதுனால எல்லாரையும் உள்ள விட மாட்டா . எங்க மாமா vegetarian . அதனால தான் விட்டா”

Vishnu’s visit to Delhi: (Vishnu was around 6 years old)
Priya and I took Vishnu to a restaurant… Vishnu started oggling at the dishes in the next table. I told him that its not good manners to stare at next plate.
Vishnu: “ok mama, நான் பார்க்கலை …மாமா நீங்களே பார்த்து சொல்லுங்கோளேன் , அவா என்ன சாப்பிடறா” ————————————————————-
Vishnu celebrated his 6th birthday in Delhi. I had brought some friends home. Some one asked amma what is Vishnu’s age and she said he is six now.
Vishnu quite concerned and whispered to amma “அம்மம்மா நான் school le எல்லார் கிட்டயும் 5 தான் சொல்லியிருக்கேன்” ———————–
Nagercoil trip – when Hari was probably 3 years old. We bought ‘matti pazham’ the famous sweet banana of nagercoil. Its small in size.
Hari looking at it for the first time, quipped “இது மட்டி பழமா குட்டி பழமா?”—————————————————————————-
Hari’s LKG time- His class teacher name was Ms.Nandini. The name reminded Amma of the cow in Bharadwaj with same name. So often amma used to say nandini is a cow’s name. Once we were travelling in car and saw a herd of cows. Amma suddenly remembered nandini and mocked Hari:
“Hey hari , look nandini is here…”
And Hari was not perturbed… He simply looked at the cow and said “good morning mam !!” ———————————————————————-
Amma was feeding ayyappan and wondered aloud comparing him to lord Krishna
“அவன் வாயிலே பாரு பூமியே தெரியறது … பாரு நம்ப இருக்கற adyar எல்லாம் கூட தெரியறது”
Hari: “ஐயோ , ஐயப்பா ஏன்டா adyar போய் சாப்பிட்டாய்”———————————————————————————–
We bought alphabet magnets which Hari and Eashwar play with. Hari learnt to write his name as “HARI”.
He wanted to write his name with magnet. He assembled “H – – I”, and couldnt find ‘A’ and ‘R’.
He started mumbling “இப்போதைக்கு இத Aஆ வெச்சுக்கலாம். இப்போதைக்கு இத R ஆ வெச்சுக்கலாம் .”
Then he excitedly shouted” Hey Eashwar… நான் என் பேர் எழுதியாச்சு பாரு”
It was “H Q X I”….. where Q and X was supposed to represent A and R…————————–
Meena used to teach flags and Hari & Eashwar used to get excited. They once get hold of a map with countries and flags.

It was raining and snails had come out. Two snails were spotted in the compound wall. One of them was moving.
Hari: “மாமா நத்தை எங்க போறது”
Me “ஒரு நத்தையோடு வீடு இந்த மதில். இன்னொரு நத்தையோடு வீடு பின்னாடி மதில்லே இருக்கு . அதோட வீட்டுக்கு போறது .”
Hari : “ஆனா நத்தையோடு வீடு அதோட முதுகுல தானே இருக்கும்”
